Day One - St. George to Mt. Carmel Junction via Zion National Park

Our Seven-Day, 500+ mile tour began in St. George. The first day we travel to Mt. Carmel Junction via the awe-inspiring Zion National Park. Here are some of our Tour guests at the lunch stop in Springdale, Utah, just a mile or so from the Park Entrance. There are 27 of us in total, including my wonderful Husband (sitting on the bench in the polka dot jersey), and his parents (Judy, his mom, is driving SAG and running the lunch stop; and Ron, his dad, is riding as much of Tour as he can. He's back on the bike after nearly 20 years!!!) Zion National Park is a magical place. Zion Canyon Drive is 14 miles out-and-back of breathtaking scenery along the Virgin River - and NO CARS! The only vehicles, besides bikes of course, are the Zion Shuttle buses, which are quiet, propane fueled, and driven by very courteous drivers.

We had record high temperatures today - well into the hundreds. Bow needed a little break in the shade, while Deb dipped her feet in the Virgin River.

Bow and I really enjoyed the views along the Canyon floor!

We can ride our bikes in the park - but not through it - because there's a tunnel at the top of the hill through which bikes are not allowed to ride. So we just rode to the tunnel to check out the views, then enjoyed the downhill. We had to pile into vans with our bikes on the roof in order to get to the other side of the park and re-mount our bikes for the ride to Mt. Carmel Junction.
Here are some shots from the ride on the other side of the tunnel, on the way to Mt. Carmel Junction.

Bow and I are having a GREAT time!
This is Checkerboard Mesa - Bow's last photo of the day. By the time I took this it was still well over 100 degrees - and time to head down the hill to the hotel and a nice cool shower!
Since today was Judy's first day ever doing SAG support for a bicycling event, Bow and I rode in the SAG van from St. George to Springdale, helped set up and serve lunch, and then rode the rest of the miles into Zion and down to Mt. Carmel Junction. Our ride today was 47.4 miles with 2,780' of climbing.
